Sandilands Nature Reserve Restoration: A Flagship Project
One of our most notable collaborations was the Sandilands Nature Reserve Restoration, a large-scale land remediation project situated near Mablethorpe, commissioned by the National Trust. This project showcased our appreciation for sustainability and wildlife protection, as we worked closely with a multidisciplinary team of geologists, archaeologists, ornithologists, civil engineers, and architects.
Project Overview:
The 100-acre site, spanning over a mile in length, presented a complex challenge. The scope of works included:
- Bulk earthworks to reshape the landscape and create a naturalistic environment.
- Sustainable drainage system installations to manage water flow and prevent erosion.
- Extensive concreting works to construct bridges, weirs, headwalls, and retaining walls.
- Creation of over 20 differently shaped mounds and 20+ ponds to provide habitat diversity.
- Installation of miles of watercourses and paths to facilitate wildlife movement and visitor access.
Our Contribution
We developed a detailed machine control model from the principal engineer's and architects' drawings, tailored to the specific needs of the on-site plant machinery. This involved creating different format files for various systems, including Leica, Topcon, Trimble, and Komatsu. Our other main responsibilities included:
- Conducting cut and fill assessments and creating an isopachyte to identify areas of deeper cut that could be utilized as fill material.
- Monitoring cut and fill operations to ensure drivers were on-grade and to minimize wasted production.
- Providing setting out services for structures, drainage, and paths to ensure accurate construction.
- Delivering architectural and civil engineering design changes in response to site constraints, involving numerous RFIs and close collaboration with the project team.
- Creating visualizations using LSS & AutoCAD to illustrate the project's progress and final outcome, facilitating stakeholder engagement and communication.
Project Delivery:
Upon completion, we provided comprehensive as-built documentation, including all concrete structures, drainage, and earthworks contours. This documentation ensured that the client had a complete and accurate record of the project's final state. Despite challenging winter weather conditions, we successfully delivered the project on-time, marking a significant achievement.
